French is taught from Years 3 to 6 by working with one of our partner secondary schools through the support offered by the Templer Academy Schools Trust (TAST).

With a strong focus on oral communication, children are encouraged to practise their speaking and listening skills mainly through the use of games, songs, rhymes and drama. In addition to whole-class oral work, there are opportunities for children to rehearse their skills in pairs or small groups.
In the course of their studies, the fundamentals of the written language are explored and the children gradually build up their ability to read and write French as they progress through the curriculum.
Alongside the development of their linguistic skills, children research aspects of French culture and are encouraged to share their own experiences and knowledge of French and other languages. As part of our cultural awareness programme this year we held a French Day; this involved sampling French cuisine, learning French carols, recreating famous French landmarks and holding a fashion show with a sustainable theme.
The interest that has been created in languages is evident in our children's desire to take an active role in their learning. This year, older pupils have set up French and Spanish clubs for the younger children which have been enthusiastically attended and supported.
Above all, the aim of our French curriculum is to inspire children in their future language learning and nurture the skills which will enable a smooth transition to learning a language in secondary school. We also aim to create an interest in finding out about other cultures and societies.
